What's the cranking current of your car?
A starter motor requires a very high current to crank the engine. For example, one of the starter motor power of AUDI 2.0L gasoline engine is designed as 1.1KW. Generally speaking, we just provide this starter only 92A/12VDC to start a car. Right? Certainly not. This starter motor is connected to flying wheel. In facts, the resistance of the flying wheel bearing, the electric equipments in the car, the compression ratio of cylinders, compression rings, oil rings, and even the positions of pistons, effect the cranking current. We have tested many vehicles the starting current. For gasoline engine, the cranking current of Honda Accord 2.0 is about 160A, for 2.4L type is about 200A. For Discovery 4.0L (Land Rover) gasoline, the starting current is just about 240A; M-Benz GLK 350 3.5L is about 340A. But for AUDI, Q5 2.0L Quattro gasoline engine, the cranking current is up to 340A. Luxgen, which is a new and great brand in Taiwan, the cranking current of U6 is about 380A, and U7 is about 400A. We can not explain the values of starting current means. But some of them have different design in starter motor structures. Not all European vehicles have higher starting current. For example, the starting current of SAAB 95 2.0t gasoline engine is 180A~210A; M-Benz E200 1.8L and 2.0 L are about 185A and 240A. The turbo engine vehicles, especially for smaller cars, have higher starting current so far we have already tested. For example, VW Golf 1.2L TSI is about 185A; Ford Kuga 1.6L turbo is about 230A. For diesel engines, the cranking current are much higher than that of gasoline engines. Because of different combusting ways, the compression ration of diesel engine is originally designed higher than gasoline engine. Though nowadays most diesel engine has turbo design, but the average compression ratio is about 14~18, still higher than gasoline engines. For AUDI Q7 TDI 3.0L V6, the cranking current is about 310A; for BMW 730d 3.0L L6, the starting current is about 520A. Also we have tested the 24V system- trucks and buses. For HINO (made in Japan), the starting current of 8.5t truck is about 280~320A, and the cranking current of 300 series buses are about 210A~250A. For Scania K340, the starting current is 400A~450A ; and the cranking current of K380 is higher, about 700A. The cranking current listed above are just for reference. Because it's effected by many reasons, like the temperature, the vehicle resting time, the electric equipments...etc.. And we use the popular, simple device to detect the cranking current.
